Petr Nikl

Petr Nikl

Petr Nikl (*1960) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He belongs to the generation of artists that had a significant impact on Czech art after the 1989 Velvet Revolution. His diverse body of work includes painting, graphic art, photography, performance and sculpture. Nikl’s creative activities go beyond the realm of visual arts; he is also an actor, singer, puppeteer and author. His art often revisits the world of childhood, confronting innocence, the search for one’s identity and the parable of coming of age. Their formal precision is disturbing, revealing the artist’s inner world to the viewers. Petr Nikl’s installations and objects are often playful and interactive and use kinetic elements. He was a member of The Stubborn Ones art group and is a founder of the Medehaha theater ensemble. He represented the Czech Republic at Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan. He went on residencies at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Marseilles and Headlands Center for the Arts in the US. He received several Most Beautiful Book Awards.
