Vladimír Kokolia

Vladimír Kokolia (*1956), the first holder of Jindřich Chalupecký Award, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague at the Painting Studio of Jan Smetana. He consistently works in the classic media of painting, drawing and printmaking. His images are often ornamental, he works with soft, diluted color and divides the surface of the image into geometric patterns. The shapes of his figures and landscapes often vanish or blur in his paintings. They leave space to the imagination of the viewers or to different points of view rising to the surface besides the primary ones. Vladimír Kokolia is greatly inspired by eastern philosophy. Besides painting and graphic arts, he also dedicates his time to Chinese ancient martial arts, singing and songwriting. He received the prestigious Dalibor Chatrný Award 2012. He heads the Printmaking Studio II at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague where he taught several prominent contemporary Czech visual artists.
