Finalist of Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2017
"Gajarský expresses himself primarily in the medium of photography and the moving image with a special sense of analog technology and its history. The jury appreciates his precise work in these media and their interconnection with current, intimate themes." (jury statement)
Dominik Gajarský (*1986) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Studio of New Media II/Anna Daučíková School). He also went on a study stay at the Universität der Künste in Berlin (Josephine Pryde Studio). In 2014, he was one of the finalists of the Leinemann Foundation Award. Gajarský expresses himself primarily in the medium of photography and the moving image with a special sense of analog technology and its history. In terms of form, he often alludes to modernist images, however, at the same time, he perceives the canon and hegemony of western culture critically, with regard to post-colonial discourse, feminism and ecology. He regularly presents his work at solo and collective exhibitions and showcases in the Czech Republic and abroad, e.g. at Close-Up Film Centre in London, PAF in New York, the Czech Center in Berlin and the National Gallery in Prague. He went on a residency within the EIB Artists’ Development Programme in Luxembourg and at the Summer Academy in Salzburg. Besides the field of visual arts, he is also an active musician.
