Thirty-sixth edition of the prize presents, for the second time, just three laureates: Dominik Adamec, Barbora Lungová, and Karolína Rossí. Since last year, the selection of the international jury is no longer restricted by an age limit of thirty-five, yet these are still artists whose work has only recently begun to establish itself. We believe that the joint exhibition at the National Gallery Prague will have a positive impact on their further creative development, which we have also sought to support throughout this past year with a monthly stipend. The removal of the age limit is also reflected in the selection of the exhibition’s foreign guest, Dutch painter Kinke Kooi (b. 1961), whose artistic career spans decades, but who has only recently gained significant international recognition. Kooi’s works are being presented in the Czech Republic for the first time in her solo exhibition Listening Body.
The four artists presenting their works this year are united by a distinctive aesthetic that is at the same time specific to each of them. It is safe to say that this year you can enjoy a surprisingly artistic edition of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, which once again confirms that it is and always has been dedicated to contemporary art in the full richness of its current forms, including “traditional media” such as painting, drawing, and sculpture.
Their work is formally singular, striking, and original, but it is not detached from reality; rather, it is rooted in reflection on the world and the active identification of various (often paradoxical) neuralgic points of potential conflict, inequality, or violence.
Access Notes
- The Trade Fair Palace building is fully barrier-free — it is equipped with elevators, step-free access throughout, and accessible restrooms. Two wheelchairs are available to borrow at the ground-floor cloakroom.
- The building also houses the Kolektor café, and a children’s play area is located in the Atlas space (1st floor of the Small Hall).
- Various types of seating are available throughout the exhibition galleries.
- The works on display do not pose any health risks in terms of sensory overload.
- Please note that there is no visitor parking available at the National Gallery Prague. The nearest public transport connection is the Veletržní palác tram stop. When arriving from Strossmayerovo náměstí, the stop is located directly in front of the building; in the opposite direction, it is located in front of the Mama Shelter hotel.
