Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1993

In 1993, a jury of Czech visual artists and theorists nominated a single artist for the 4th edition of the leading Czech award for visual artists under 35. His work was exhibited at Václav Špála Gallery.

In 1993, Martin Mainer was the finalist of the 4th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award.

Award Holder

Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1993 went to Martin Mainer. “As I clearly see today, one of the key moments in my life was a cold November evening in 1975. I was walking down the empty streets of Havířov and randomly looked into the shop window of the only art shop in town. There I saw two small paintings by my first future teacher Jaroslav Kapec. When I got home that night, I told my mother in a deep conversation that I wanted to be a painter. I don’t know where this decision came from, but I was absolutely firm and clear about it, and neither I, nor my parents, especially my mom, could resist it,” writes Martin Mainer in his text for the Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1993 catalogue. The award holder received CZK 100.000 for an exhibition, publication or a creative project of his choice and a six-week residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts, California.

The Head of the Jury of the 4th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award was aesthetician and visual arts critic Josef Hlaváček. The jury further included painter and singer Stanislav Diviš, sculptor Věra Janoušková, curator Marie Judlová, visual artist Ivan Kafka, sculptor and painter Karel Malich, Russian artist based in Prague Viktor Pivovarov, visual artist and graphic designer Joska Skalník, art historian Jiří Šetlík, and art theorist and critic Igor Zhoř. The jury was the same as in the past edition.

The Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1993 exhibition featuring the work of Martin Mainer was held May 12 to 29, 1993 at Václav Špála Gallery. After a residency at Headlands, Martin Mainer presented his exhibition Trip, or the Western Way to India inspired by Eastern philosopher Ram Dass. The exhibition was held at Prague’s New Hall in 1996.
