About the Award
The Jindřich Chalupecký Award is a prestigious distinction for visual artists active on the Czech art scene. Since 1990, it has been presented by the Jindřich Chalupecký Society with the aim of supporting contemporary art, opening space for new perspectives, and strengthening its role in society.
Who It Is For
The award is open to artists working on the Czech scene, regardless of age or medium, who actively contribute to its development. Since 2023, there has been no age limit.
How It Works
Each year, an international jury selects several awardees from the pool of applicants. They subsequently present their work in a group exhibition and receive access to an artistic residency and other forms of support. The selection process is open, transparent, and based on portfolio review.
History of the Award
The award is named after Jindřich Chalupecký, a leading Czech theorist and advocate of living art. Its creation in 1990 was initiated by leading figures of 20th-century Czech culture—Jiří Kolář, Theodor Pištěk, and Jiří Šetlík. Václav Havel served as its patron.
