Štěpánka Šimlová

Štěpánka Šimlová (*1966) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and studied at the Rijksakademie von Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and Nottingham Trent University. She works in new media, video and photographic series but often revisits painting as well. In her work, she challenges market icons, slogans and commercials which force stereotypical views of reality on society, turning them into subjective and personal accounts disrupting usual expectations. She addresses topics that are both purely personal and political, social and gender-oriented. For five years, she headed the Digital Media Studio at the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem; currently, she heads the Intermedia Studio at the Department of Photography at FAMU in Prague.
