Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2013

An international jury nominated five artists for the 24th edition of the leading Czech award for visual artists under 35. The collective exhibition was held at the National Gallery Prague. From May to October, the finalists presented their work in five Czech cities within a series of side events organized by Jindřich Chalupecký Award.

Finalists

The finalists of the 24th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 2013 included Dominik Lang, Daniela Baráčková, Aleš Čermák, Václav Magid and Richard Nikl“I genuinely appreciate the enthusiasm with which the finalists approach this edition of the Award; each in their own yet very convincing way. It’s a great energy to work with and the exhibition only proves that,” said curator Lenka Lindaurová from Jindřich Chalupecký Society about this year’s selection.

Award Holder

Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2013 went to Dominik Lang.

“In his East West presentation, he did not use any new material, rather working with the space of the fifth floor of the Trade Fair Palace. He modified the existing gallery panels, cutting out circular openings in them and placing them opposite each other on the sides. In the morning, the rising sun appeared in one of them, travelled over the glass gallery ceiling, and set in the opening on the other side. The artist redirected the viewers’ attention from the many artworks shown at the gallery to its forgotten beauty, while symbolically pointing out the ephemeral nature of art.” The award holder received CZK 100.000 for an exhibition, publication or a creative project of his choice and an international residency.

The Audience Award went to Richard Nikl.

Jury

The head of the jury was MoMA curator Christian Rattemeyer. The jury further included chief curator of Vienna’s MuMoK Rainer Fuchs, curator and chief editor of Springerin art magazine Georg Schöllhammer, curators Ondřej Chrobák, Edith Jeřábková and Mira Keratová, and artist and professor Tomáš Lahoda. The jury was the same as in the past edition.

Exhibition

After several years, the collective exhibition Jindřich Chalupecký Award – Final 2013 was held at the National Gallery Prague again. For the first time in the Award’s history, the exhibition of the finalists was held along with the solo exhibition of last year’s award holder Vladimír Houdek. It was our aim to present the work of the latest award holder, who had one year to create his work, in confrontation with those who are still aspiring for the Award.

Award Ceremony

The award ceremony of the 24th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award was held at the Trade Fair Palace in Prague on November 15, 2013. Dominik Lang received the Award in the final part of a theatrical performance created specifically for this occasion; the program was directed by David Jařab and held at the Studio Hrdinů theater hall in Prague.
