Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2003

An international jury nominated five artists for the 14th edition of the leading Czech award for visual artists under 35. The exhibition and the award ceremony were held at the private Futura Gallery in Prague.

Finalists

The finalists of the 14th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 2003 included Michal Pěchouček, Krištof Kintera, Ján Mančuška, Jan Šerých and Michaela Thelenová. Krištof Kintera had been nominated already in 1991 and 2001.

Award Holder

Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2003 went to Michal Pěchouček whose realistic art is closely linked to film. “Why would we paint portraits of people when we can easily photograph or videotape them? Pěchouček is definitely no conservative old-timer. He is well aware of the invasion of new technologies into traditional art disciplines and has been in dialogue with them for a long time,” Tomáš Pospiszyl wrote for Týden in 2003. The award holder received CZK 100.000 for an exhibition, publication or another creative project and an international residency.

Jury

The head of the jury was art historian and curator Charlotta Kotik who has worked for New York’s MoMA and presided Jindřich Chalupecký Society. The jury further included art historian and teacher Vladimír Beskid, sculptor and photographer Magdalena Jetelová, multimedia artist and 1997 Award holder Jiří Příhoda, teacher and art historian Jiří Ševčík, German archeologist and art historian Christopher Tannert, and Australian curator Jonathan Watkins. The jury was the same as in the past edition.
