Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2000

In 2000, a jury of Czech visual artists and theorists nominated five artists for the 11th edition of the leading Czech award for visual artists under 35. The award ceremony was held in front of the Trade Fair Palace of the National Gallery Prague.

The finalists of the 11th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 2000 included David Černý, Veronika Bromová, Tomáš Hlavina, František Kowolowski and Jan Stolín. Tomáš Hlavina had already been a finalist of the past edition, Veronika Bromová was nominated in 1996.

Award Holder

Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2000 went to David Černý, a controversial Czech artist whose works often enter social and political contexts. Due to disputes with Milan Knížák, then director of the National Gallery, during the installation of the exhibition Final 2000, the award ceremony was held on the street in front of the gallery.

“How do you feel as the award winner? Do you feel like things have come to a close?”

“On Thursday night, I felt like the winner of Jindřich Chalupecký Cup. After all, I had two machines on the starting line. And yes, some things did come to a close – for me, the entrance to the Trade Fair Palace. During the installation, National Gallery director Knížák had me escorted out of the building by security. I will not set foot in this institution again as long as it is ruled by this generalissimo,” David Černý said to Lenka Lindaurová in an interview for Týden in 2000. The award holder received CZK 100.000 CZ for an exhibition, publication or a creative project of his choice and an international residency.

The Head of the Jury of the 11th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award was art historian and curator Magdalena Juříková. The jury further included art historian and critic Richard Drury, curator and art historian Vít Havránek, teacher and art critic Michal Koleček, art historian and teacher Vojtěch Lahoda, journalist and art historian Lenka Lindaurová, sculptor and visual artist Jaroslav Róna, art critic and theorist Katarína Rusnáková, curator and performer Jiří Surůvka, and curator and conceptual artist Jiří Valoch.
