Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1996

In 1996, a jury of Czech visual artists and theorists nominated a single artist for the 7th edition of the leading Czech award for visual artists under 35. She was the first woman artist to receive the Jindřich Chalupecký Award. Her work was exhibited at Václav Špála Gallery in 1997.

Finalists

In 1996, Kateřina Vincourová was the finalist of the 7th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award. She became the first woman artist to receive the Jindřich Chalupecký Award.

Award Holder

Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1996 went to Kateřina Vincourová. “First of all, I think it is actually an appreciation of my whole generation. I never met Jindřich Chalupecký in person and I never met people who would talk about him much. It’s a bit awkward but I may be undereducated in that respect, so I don’t feel any affinity with his personality and work. Chalupecký remains an authority figure for the older generation, while we, the young ones, deal mostly with the things we are living now, and only address things from the past if they are actively offered to us,” Vincourová admits to Marek Pokorný in an interview for MF DNES in 1996. The award holder received CZK 100.000 for an exhibition, publication or a creative project of her choice and an international residency.

The Head of the Jury of the 7th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award was curator and gallerist Jiří Švestka.
