In 1994, a jury of Czech visual artists and theorists nominated a single artist for the 5th edition of the leading Czech award for visual artists under 35. His work was exhibited at Václav Špála Gallery.

Award Holder
Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1994 went to Michal Gabriel. In the Award catalogue, he said the following about the production process of the exhibited sculptures: “I modelled the sculptures out of wax and had them cast in bronze at first because they could not be preserved in wax. Later, when I realized that the casting process was similar to the petrification process, ‘petrification’ became a key moment in my work on the following sculptures.” The award holder received CZK 100.000 for an exhibition, publication or a creative project of his choice and an international residency.

The Head of the Jury of the 5th edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award was art historian and curator Milena Slavická. The jury further included painter Tomáš Císařovský, Czech art historian and theorist of Greek origin Kaliopi Chamonikola, painter and textile artist Olga Karlíková, photographer and art historian Jan Kříž, painter Jan Merta, art historian and poet Karel Miler, art historian Marcela Pánková, curator Alena Potůčková, sculptor Jaroslav Róna, conceptual artist Václav Stratil and painter Květa Válová.
