Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1992

In 1992, a jury of Czech visual artists and theorists nominated two finalists for the 3rd edition of the leading Czech award for visual artists under 35. Their works were presented at the collective exhibition Between Aesop and Mowgli at Václav Špála Gallery curated by Vlasta Čiháková-Noshiro and Milena Slavická.

Finalists

The finalists of the 3rd edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 1992 included Michal Nesázal and Petr Nikl.

Award Holder

Jindřich Chalupecký Award 1992 went to Michal Nesázal. “The presence of a recollection or experience from the time ‘before the expulsion from Paradise,’ the presence of imagination growing out of a psyche untouched by neuroses, phobias, and exhibitionism, is very strong and distinctive in the work of Michal Nesázal. Paradise, and the intuitive faith in it, is one of the main motifs and motivations of his art. It takes different forms, different expressions, ranging from naive to serious attempts at reaching what one could call a “pure mind,” writes Milena Slavická in her text Elizabeth Way from 1993. The award holder received CZK 100.000 for an exhibition, publication or a creative project of his choice and a six-week residency in New York. Honorable Mention went to Petr Nikl.

Jury

The Head of the Jury of the 3rd edition of Jindřich Chalupecký Award was aesthetician and visual arts critic Josef Hlaváček. The jury further included painter and singer Stanislav Diviš, sculptor Věra Janoušková, curator Marie Judlová, visual artist Ivan Kafka, sculptor and painter Karel Malich, Russian artist based in Prague Viktor Pivovarov, visual artist and graphic designer Joska Skalník, art historian Jiří Šetlík, and art theorist and critic Igor Zhoř. After the past two editions, the jury was completely changed.

Exhibition

The collective exhibition Between Aesop and Mowgli was held June 4 to 21, 1992 at Václav Špála Gallery. The show was curated by Vlasta Čiháková-Noshiro and Milena Slavická. The figure of Mowgli symbolized barbarism and the romantic ideas associated with it. The addressed topics included the hardships of the young generation.
