"Jan Šerých in his paintings, videos and installation seemingly follows up with the local tradition of abstract art, yet, in an enormously laborious way, he creates vacant Technicist pictures that captivate discrepancy between willingness to create and impossibility of contemporary art to communicate something in a meaningful way." (Jury Statement)

Jan Šerých (*1972) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He paid study visits to ISCP in New York and to PROGR in Bern, Switzerland. His abstract and minimalist art is often technology-based. He makes use of the medium of painting, installation, video or object, working with typography signs, slogans, cryptography or codes, which he plays against the elements of space, form or color. The references in his art carry multivalent information, or their communication deliberately arouses discomfort in the viewer. Jan Šerých was member of the Bezhlavý jezdec (Headless Horseman) art group. He won the Strabag Artaward and is represented by the Hunt Kastner Art Gallery in Prague. Jan Šerých is assistant professor at the Painting II Studio of Vladimír Skrepl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
