In 2021, the international jury selected five visual artists under the age of 35 to receive the 32nd Jindřich Chalupecký Award. The title of laureate went to Robert Gabris, Jakub Jansa, Valentýna Janů, Anna Ročňová and the artistic non-collective björnsonova (Nik Timková, Zuzana Žabková, Lucie Svoboda Mičíková, Lucia Kvočáková, Tamara Antonijević and Tanja Šljivar). Following their initial exhibition at the Moravian Gallery in Brno, visitors to the Regional Gallery in Liberec can now also become acquainted with this representative selection of contemporary Czech and Slovak art.

The Jindřich Chalupecký Award exhibitions are typically a type of probe into themes which, on the one hand, are grounded in the specific artists’ individual experiences, creative processes and chosen shared content, and on the other hand also reflect more universal issues resonating within the arts scene. The exhibition presentation of the CJCH 2021 Laureates in the building of the former spa to some degree echoes the projects produced last year, augmented by some of their previous artworks, which influenced the jury’s decision to select them for the Award. In addition to the installation in the usual exhibition space on the gallery’s second floor, this time the Jindřich Chalupecký Society curators also chose to install some works in several places within the permanent collections of the Regional Gallery Liberec, presenting a literal intervention, generating dialogue and confrontation with works from earlier historical periods.

In addition to the supporting texts accompanying the works themselves, visitors to the exhibition can also consult the CJCH 2021 exhibition catalogue. Here they can peruse the textual and pictorial documentation of the exhibition at the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Original photographs and texts by the exhibiting artists is freely interspersed within this content. The publication also includes original prose by writer, scriptwriter, dramaturge and publicist Klára Vlasáková, loosely inspired by an interview with the five laureates on the topic of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award's transformation in recent years. However, its message can be applied to the broader general issue of art awards and institutions.
