Café Chalupecký: Raphael Fonseca - online

Brazilian curator Raphael Fonseca was to visit the Czech Republic in summer 2020, when he originally planned a work trip to Munich to open an exhibition at Haus der Kunst. However, as a result of the pandemic, his trip to Europe did not take place this year and as a guest of Café Chalupecký he will not visit Prague until 2021. Therefore we decided to ask Raphael to create a video-talk especially for this occasion, introducing his curatorial practice focused on thematic dialogues throughout history.

Raphael Fonseca is a researcher in the areas of curating, art history, art critic and education. Actually he works as a curator at MAC Niterói (Contemporary Art Museum of Niterói). He holds PhD in Critic and Art History (State University of Rio de Janeiro). He's one of the curators of the next edition of the SESC_VIdeobrasil Biennale, working along with Renée Akitelek Mboya and Solange Farkas, in 2023. At the moment he's working on a group show that will open June 2021 at Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany, curated with Anna Schneider. Since mid-2020, he has developed the project "1 curadorx, 1 hora" where he interviews curators related to Brazil and from different generations and regions of the world.

He received the Marcantonio Vilaça Curatorial Award (2015) and the Centro Cultural São Paulo curatorial award (2017). He writes regularly for ArtNexus. Recent shows include "To-and-fro" (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, São Paulo, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, 2019-20); "Lost and found" (ICA Singapore, 2019); "Sonia Gomes: life is reborn, always" (MAC Niterói, 2018); "Sleepers - Pierre Verger" (Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro, 2018); "Bestiary" (Centro Cultural São Paulo, 2017); "When the time presses" (Palácio das Artes, Belo Horizonte, 2016); "Swipe <surf skate>" (Museu de Arte do Rio, 2014); "Soft water, hard rock" (1st Clay Biennial, Caruaru, 2014).
