Michelle Levy: Vertical Retrace

Curatorial selection of Jindřich Chalupecký Award female finalists video works by Michelle Levy (EFA Project Space, NY): Adéla Babanová, Daniela Baráčková, Isabela Grosseová, Tereza Velíková, Jana Kalinová. "Vertical retrace" is an analog video term referencing the measurement of time between the end of one frame being drawn, and the beginning of the next frame. Approaching "vertical" as an allusion to hierarchical structure, and "retrace" as an opportunity for revision, a group of Jindřich Chalupecký Award finalists, all women, have been invited to share video works that have either not been seen widely, or that they would like to revisit because they have fallen out of time. The works shared retrace fragmented perception, interrogating memory, language, history, loss and social identity.
